How it all began…
Barbara Bolan, founder of the Market Basket Café, began her dream of owning a café and catering business on October 31, 2002. Compliments from friends about her wonderful cooking, and an overwhelming collection of Longaberger baskets, allowed for little imagination for a name. It had to have something with baskets-thus Market Basket Café & Catering.
A diamond in the rough location, built in 1869, it took much imagination to visualize the quaint family restaurant you see today. A collective effort by many allowed for the doors to be opened and the café and catering business had a home. Family traditions, family recipes, and family help will be seen in each part of the café. You will see Barbara’s mother, Rosie, baking & serving; her sister, Theresa, serving customers; husband, Donnie, assisting at the grill and close friends helping cook & serve.
When you pass through the wooden front door, with a transom stain glass, you might think you are visiting Grandma's. Many of the café recipes have been inspired from Grandma Turner’s kitchen, where Barb learned a pinch & a smidgen were the best measuring techniques. You’ll always find a selection of homemade soups, dumplings, breads, desserts and other family recipe treasures at the Market Basket Café.
Once upon a day and a time, the railroad ran through the thriving town of Richland. Captain D.E. Davis was the first owner of the property, located at 204 East McClurg and was responsible for building most of Richland’s structures. The current architecture is unique in design and a one of a kind in Richland and in the state of Missouri, due to the Mansard Roof. A Mansard roof has two slopes on all sides, with the lower slope steeper than the upper one. The purpose was to enhance the livability of the upper floor. You will notice these features upstairs in the Market Basket Café gift shop.
Thank you for getting off the beaten path and visiting the Market Basket Café. The nicest compliment you can give us is to tell your friends of your experience at our café.
